As a food reviewer for Menu Buzz, I can confidently say that Steve's Place elevates the classic deli experience. Upon entering, you're greeted by the warm smiles of Doug and his dedicated team—cousin Johnn, Susie, Michaela, and Mike—who embody the charm that makes this eatery so beloved. The walls echo with stories of loyal customers and sports memorabilia, weaving a rich narrative of Newington's history.
The menu shines with an all-day selection of cold and hot sandwiches that cater to every palate. Priced at just US$11.49, it’s a delightful explosion of flavor in every bite.
For those craving something warm and hearty, the Chicken Parm Sandwich offers a heavenly combination of baked and breaded chicken cutlet smothered in homemade red sauce, perfectly paired with grilled sweet peppers and provolone cheese—all served on freshly baked bread for US$14.49. “ This is such a great local spot. There is a wide variety of options. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Never disappointed. Rotating specials. Quality food. Highly recommend. ”
“ I'm giving Steve's five stars because my food was excellent but I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get spinach as a wrap or grinder topping. I had actually had trouble getting spinach on my wrap at a couple local delis and my coworker recommended I try Steve's as she thought they might have spinach on the menu and be able to throw some on a wrap for me. But I still love the food and Stateline potato chips is a huge plus! Plus the staff are super nice and accommodating (except for the spinach but I'm not holding that against them). ”
“ Steve’s place never fails to amaze me. Doug and his team, which I met all of today, cousin Johnn, Susie, Michaela, and Mike. Gave me nothing but love. My fellow customers are special and loyal. I met a high caliber customer today who was part of the Newington high class of 1974 along with a colleague of the class of 74. They’ve been coming to Steve’s place for over 50 years. It’s like memory lane. The walls are full of Newington sports and memorabilia which creates an atmosphere of hometown. Oh, and the food the best. Come to Steve’s Place! come on Connell! ”
“ Hands down Steve’s place is the best lunch in the Newington Center area. I have been coming here basically my whole life. Doug is such a great guy very outstanding. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you meet Doug. I can’t say enough great things About Steve’s place Definitely a great gemstone in the community! You gotta check out their meatball grinders and their chocolate chip cookies are outstanding definitely one of my favorites. I have never had a bad experience here ever so check them out today! Thanks, Steve’s place! Jerry’s Pathways & Patios LLC ”
“ I've been going here since 1975, and there's a very good reason, quality, great ownership and staff. Steve's Place is Newington. My memories of Steve's Place are endless. Suzi Q's, Grape drink, and packman are just a few memories. The highest quality grinders, chicken entrees, shells with meatball, salad, and the feeling of home are their strengths. Their pastrami, tuna, and meatball grinders are the best in central connecticut. Say hi to doug for me. Go here when you can, disappointment is not an option. ”
“ Absolutely the best Meatball Grinder I've had in any restaurant in Conn. Sliced to eat and not wear, and accompanied with potato salad is a definite winner. I live ought of town and I've brought some close friends in...who are also Italian, and they agreed with me how good the meatball grinder is. The wait staff is friendly and hard working and some have been employed there for years. I've been going there since the 90's. See you soon! ”
“ Steve’s is the ultimate New England deli place and I don’t hesitate to bring colleagues or clients there. Menu covers all the bases from daily specials (lobster rolls, southwest chicken cutlets, shells and sauce) to old stand-by favorites (liverwurst, ham and cheese, etc.) and salads any way you want them. Become a regular, and Doug and his team will learn your name, preferences and food allergies! BEST damn chocolate chip cookies commercially available. Hosmer Mountain sodas in the reach-in cooler (help yourself!). Don’t sleep on this gem. ”
“ First time in Newington and my first time at Steve’s Place! I stopped in for a quick lunch during an unexpected break in my day, looking for a classic Connecticut sandwich shop—and this place did not disappoint. The staff gave me a few recommendations, and I went with the chicken cutlet grinder. It was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving. What really stood out, though, was the service. I’m not sure of his name, but I’m guessing the owner or manager came out from behind the counter, sat with me, and chatted for a few minutes. As a first-time customer, I’ve never felt more welcomed. Thanks for the great experience, Steve’s Place—I’ll definitely be back, next time I’m in Newington!! ”
